Activity Summary:
Pericarditis, myocarditis, and endocarditis are complex, often difficult-to-treat conditions that increase a patient’s risk of death. These inflammatory diseases are associated with increased mortality and morbidity in people of all ages. Valvular diseases are also on the increase due to the unprecedented jump in IV drug addiction. We explore various etiologies, signs, symptoms, diagnostics, and interventions for these profoundly ill patients while also reviewing the long-term effects on patient outcomes.
Objectives:
• List the potential etiologies of cardiac inflammatory diseases including pericarditis, myocarditis, and endocarditis.
• Explain the signs, symptoms, and assessment of the patient with cardiac inflammatory diseases.
• Consider the diagnostics, interventions, and potentially long-term impact on patient outcomes.
