Goal:
This activity will describe the regulations for disclosure of individuals’ protected health information as mandated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). General requirements to comply with HIPAA will be discussed, including situations in which consent is required to disclose protected health information, prohibited uses/disclosures of protected health information, security standards for electronic protected health information, procedures to follow if a breach of protected health information occurs, the process for filing a complaint for a HIPAA violation, and the resulting legal proceedings.
Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this program, participants should be better able to:
• RECOGNIZE the administrative requirements that apply to covered entities mandated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
• IDENTIFY the standards that are required to secure electronic protected health information that are mandated by HIPAA
• LIST the steps necessary if a breach of unsecured protected health information occurs as mandated by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act
• SPECIFY how the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act strengthened the regulations set forth by HIPAA
