Course Description & Information:
Learners will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of a dietary supplement using evidence-based medicine. Nutritional supplements are big business in the United States with billions sold each year with some conferring no real health benefits. The course will educate the participant on which dietary supplements are effective for specific diseases and which are not. Which form of the vitamin has been shown in research to be absorbed and utilized and what current recommendations are for the different supplements.
Course Objectives:
• Identify vitamins and minerals with health benefits in the management and prevention of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis.
• Discuss the research behind the use of antioxidants in the management of heart disease and cancer.
• Identify supplements that have shown anti-inflammatory effects and which disease states might benefit from the use of anti-inflammatory agents.
• List dietary supplements that are currently marketed for weight loss and fat burning and the research behind these products.
• Review government regulations of the dietary supplement industry.
• Identify known drug-dietary supplements interactions.
