Abbas Zaidi completed his undergraduate medical training at Imperial College, London, in 2002. He undertook his cardiology training in Wales and London between 2007 and 2017. He was a Research Fellow from 2010-2013 at the Centre for Inherited Cardiac Diseases and Sports Cardiology at St George’s Hospital, London, where he gained extensive experience in the diagnosis, risk stratification, and management of primary cardiomyopathies, ion channel disorders, and cardiac diseases in athletes. His research into the athlete’s heart led to the award of an MD in 2014, as well as first-author original-research publications in leading journals such as Circulation, JACC, and European Heart Journal. He went on to complete a cardiac MRI and cardiac CT fellowship at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, in 2016.
Abbas was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, in 2017. He is certified in cardiac MRI, cardiac CT, transthoracic, and transoesophageal echocardiography, and remains actively involved in the management of cardiac diseases in athletes. Abbas has authored British Society of Echocardiography guidelines on Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy (2013), Preparticipation Screening of Sports Participants for Inherited Cardiac Diseases (2018), the Right Heart (2020), and the Tricuspid and Pulmonary Valves (2020).
