Activity Summary:
This session is appropriate for all levels of RNs or APRNs who work in pediatric critical care. We focus on three cyanotic congenital heart defects: Tetralogy of Fallot, Transposition of the Great Arteries, and Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return. After providing an overview of the anatomy and physiology of each defect, we explore the various surgical procedures used to correct the defects. Lastly, we examine three complex case studies integrating priority nursing interventions.
Objectives:
• Describe the anatomy and physiology of the Tetrology of Fallot, Transposition of the Great Arteries, and Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return.
• Explore the various surgical approaches to correct each condition as well as pre/post-operative considerations for each defect.
• Examine complex case studies for each cyanotic heart defect and appropriate nursing interventions.
