Local anesthetics are the most effective drugs in medicine for the prevention of pain. However good, adverse events can still occur. This section reviews the incidence of paresthesia following intraoral dental local anesthesia, with specific attention on articaine HCl.
Learning objectives:
On completing this section the student should be able to:
• Define ‘paresthesia’
• Discuss the literature claiming to have found a link between 4% anesthetic solutions and an increased risk of paresthesia
• Discuss the theories describing the etiology of paresthesia of the lingual nerve subsequent to inferior alveolar nerve block
