Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): What Counselors Need to Know - Conceptualizing and Treating Harm is organized by Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association (IMHCA). This course has been approved for a maximum of 2.0 CEs.
Description :
This presentation will provide theoretical and treatment considerations related to Harm Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD: often referred to as pure obsessional OCD), a type of OCD where the obsessive theme centers around violent and repugnant content, including fear of a harmful identity, fear of harming others, fear of self-harm, and fear of harming children. The assessment of pure obsessional OCD will be covered, along with how to differentiate harm OCD from suicidal and homicidal intent, impulse control problems, and PTSD. Three theories related to the etiology and treatment will also be highlighted: most notably, evolutionary theory, psychodynamic theory, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Finally, obstacles to therapeutic progress will be considered, along with a review of some of the most relevant ethical and legal issues. A brief consideration of the impact of Covid-19 concludes the presentation.
