Immunosuppressed Patient: How It Impacts Critical Care is organized by American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
Released/Updated: Sep 5, 2021
Expires: Dec 31, 2024
Activity Summary:
Immunotherapy is a type of biological therapy that employs substances to stimulate or suppress the immune system to help the body fight against what it perceives to be a foreign substance. The antigen-antibody reaction results in a cytokine storm that hopefully destroys the target. Immunotherapy includes monoclonal antibodies, checkpoint inhibitors and adoptive cellular therapies which can lead to an inflammatory response, resulting in significant clinical deterioration that requires critical care interventions. Pharmacology content = 50%.
Objectives:
• Articulate how to care of immunosuppressed patients is impacted by these new therapies.
• Compare immunotherapy agents and their side effects regarding patients.
• Differentiate care of the immunosuppressed patient from the care of other critically ill patients.
