Overview:
Pharmaceutical companies influence the therapeutic choices of physicians and other prescribers. Commercial influence on meetings and education also affects what health care providers (including prescribers, pharmacists, psychologists, and social workers) believe about both drugs and diseases. How Industry Promotion Affects Prescribing will discuss the ways in which industry influences medical information and prescribing behavior. Topics include how the pharmaceutical industry utilizes sales representatives, data mining, drug samples, Medical Science Liaisons, continuing medical education, and key opinion leaders to affect prescribing behavior. This module will also discuss effective strategies for limiting commercial influence over prescribing habits and emphasize the importance of practicing evidence-based prescribing.
Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:List three techniques used in pharmaceutical marketing.
• Describe how commercial strategies influence education for the healthcare team.
