Course Description:
Millions of people dive underwater each year, exposing themselves to the myriad of medical problems that can occur when going to depth. There are a variety of diving types, including free diving both free diving and SCUBA diving. While some risks of diving are generalized, each type of diving pose unique problems. In this module, you will learn the different way divers go underwater, outline the signs and symptoms, prevention, treatment, and evacuation guidelines of various diving injuries, describe medical conditions that contraindicate diving, and have exposure to DAN, the Diver’s Action Network.
Objectives:
The purpose of this module is to help you develop a process that will allow you to overcome obstacles and provide the patient(s) with the appropriate care.
Upon completion, students should be familiar with:
• A brief overview of dive medicine
• Pathophysiology of dive medicine
• Barotrauma
• Care of over pressure syndromes
• Decompression sickness
